Lake Linsenholz is set amid the Oberholz nature recreation area between Göppingen and Hohenstaufen. It takes just 15 minutes to get there by car from our hotel.
The car park is the starting point for a leisurely stroll to the lake or for a more ambitious walk on the 13.6-kilometre Kaiser Barbarossa circular hiking trail. A visit to the lake can be combined with a refreshing dip, as bathing in Lake Linsenholz was officially authorised in 2021. It’s hard to imagine, but around 135 million years ago, this enchanted lake in the foothills of the Swabian Jura was formed from two oceans – the Thetys Sea and the connected Jurassic Sea. Lake Linsenholz and the steep escarpment formed by these ancient waters remain as a photogenic testament to this natural phenomenon.

Hohenstaufen: Regional cuisine for climbers
Rising to 684 metres above sea level, the Hohenstaufen dominates the countryside around Göppingen. Together with the Stuifen and the Rechberg, the Hohenstaufen is the westernmost of the three Kaiserberge (‘Imperial Mountains’).
It is an outlier of the Swabian Jura, and a popular natural and historical landmark. The ruins of the former Hohenstaufen Castle, the seat of the once powerful Staufer family, are located on the cone-shaped mountain peak, while on the south-western slope is the Spielburg nature reserve. As a reward after the ascent and to fortify you for the descent, we recommend that you sit down to some typical Swabian cuisine in the Himmel und Erde (Heaven and Earth) restaurant adjacent to the castle ruins.

Helfenstein castle ruin: Tower with castle tavern
The unusual character of Helfenstein castle ruin requires an explanation. Helfenstein is a so-called ‘Spornburg’, which means that it lies on a rocky spur some distance short of the hilltop or mountain peak but still dominating the valley below.
The terrain slopes steeply away on at least two sides. Helfenstein Castle was built around 1100 by Eberhard von Helfenstein above the town of Geislingen an der Steige. The Counts of Helfenstein were among the most influential regional noble families of the Middle Ages. The scale of the ruins and the panoramic view alone are worth a visit, but there are also other reasons, namely the small Burgschenke tavern in the castle tower and the surrounding hiking trails.
