Vincent by Mulemi: in the best company

€€

Describing the distance between the elaya hotel regensburg and Vincent by Mulemi as a stone’s throw would be overstating it. The short distance is, however, only one argument in favour of this beautiful restaurant – the food is without doubt another.

The lunch options are created by an international culinary team; the hot drinks in the afternoon are paired with home-made cake; and the varied antipasti counter in the evening provides the perfect accompaniment to a glass of wine. It is highly likely that you’ll treat yourself to another glass or a different drink – after all, the atmosphere here is wonderfully relaxed. Thanks to the floor-length window facades, the interior is beautifully light and the premises are tasteful and cosy. Seating is also available outside the front door and invites you to while away the time and people-watch.

Berger & Berger: a visit to friends, beats included

When you take a trip to Berger & Berger at the Regensburg fish market, you are meant to feel at home. This is where you can spend relaxed evenings and make plenty of wonderful new memories.

This is not just a cocktail bar – even if the (signature) drinks are especially delicious here – it has far more to offer in the shape of its bar food and beats. The menu includes salads, various pinsas – including for vegetarians – and desserts. The beats are provided by hip DJs from the region. But before the party gets started, take a seat at a long or high table, on a couch, or in a comfy armchair. The wooden beams in the ceiling and beautiful wooden floor, together with the dark leather or upholstered chairs, are certain to set the right mood.

Stadtwerk.Wöhrdbad: taking the plunge in summer

What could be nicer than a summer spent by and in the water? And because the ocean is hard to come by in an urban setting, you can take the plunge in the open-air pool. This is also true in Regensburg.

The Stadtwerk.Wöhrdbad is just a few metres from the banks of the Danube, close to the centre and yet surrounded by green. Despite the idyllic location, you’ll find plenty of action here: there’s a diving platform and an adventure pool with water slides and fast-flow channel in the 50-metre sports pool. For the littlest visitors, there is also a children’s pool available. On land, older kids can also enjoy themselves in the adventure playground and sports fans can have a go on the beach volleyball court. Those who would prefer a bit of peace and quiet can make use of the wooden sun decks and vast meadows with shady trees or grab a bite on the sunny garden terrace.

Jahninsel: oasis of calm or party zone?

The Jahninsel is one of the most popular recreation areas in Regensburg. The idyllic pastureland with majestic poplar trees is enveloped by the Danube and offers both an oasis of calm for people (unless you visit during peak times or for Jahnfest, when it becomes a party zone) and a vital habitat for animals.

The section that stretches from Pfaffensteiner Steg in the west to the far side of Grieser Steg to the east is home to various species of bat, for example. There are plenty of shady spots to relax on the island. Those looking for a great view of the town should head to Steinerne Brücke. Here, where the fairground site opens up under the bridge, the view of the town’s landmarks is sublime.

Haidplatz: Regensburg insider tips – then and now

Since the Middle Ages, Haidplatz has been the place where the local populace gather to celebrate significant occasions. Once upon a time, jousting contests took place on this historic square.

And according to legend, it was where the Regensburg champion Dollinger fought a duel with the giant pagan knight Krako, an event that has been re‑enacted at the same spot every summer since 1996. No less dramatic was the tightrope crossing attempted by a French surgeon… The square is also a meeting place for locals, artisans, musicians and for anyone who is fascinated by the stories behind old buildings. And are also interested in the celebrities of the past about whom numerous anecdotes are told, for example in the Zum Goldenen Kreuz inn and the Thon-Dittmer-Palais.

Historisches Museum der Stadt Regensburg: art, culture and a cloister

At one time, it was the Minorite monastery of St Salvador; today, the site houses the Historisches Museum von Regensburg (Regensburg museum of history). Here, art and cultural history from the Stone Age to the nineteenth century is described using exhibits from Regensburg and eastern Bavaria.

In 1949, director Walter Boll opened the museum, which had been founded in 1931. The respective focal points of the three floors are: an archaeological collection that documents Regensburg and Upper Palatinate history. The sections concerning city history and ethnology can be found on the first floor, with a model of Regensburg around 1700 at a scale of 1:4000. Medieval arts and crafts from the region are exhibited on the next floor up. There is also a cloister with a late-Gothic monastery spring.

Walhalla: marble temple on the Bräuberg

Walhalla stands out commandingly against its surroundings, nestled against a green backdrop above the Danube. The neoclassical construction was based on a temple and is surrounded by columns.

It was contracted by King Ludwig I, who commissioned his favourite architect, Leo von Klenze, to build this memorial. The groundbreaking was performed in 1830, with Walhalla being opened on 18 October 1842. The name Walhalla makes reference to the warriors’ paradise Valhalla that features in Germanic mythology. Historian Johannes von Müller not only helped Ludwig with the choice of name, but also in selecting the men and women to be honoured here. The temple is lined with sumptuous marble both inside and out – the original 96 busts have been gradually supplemented since 1962. An absolute must-see!
